Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest body of water in Colorado, with a surface area of over 20 square miles. It is located in Gunnison County, about 30 miles west of the town of Gunnison, and is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area.

The history of Blue Mesa Reservoir dates back to the early 1960s when the Bureau of Reclamation constructed a dam on the Gunnison River for hydroelectric power and irrigation purposes. The resulting reservoir, which was completed in 1966, was named after the blue-gray color of its waters.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, including trout, kokanee salmon, and lake trout. The lake is known for its excellent fishing opportunities, and it's not uncommon for anglers to catch trophy-sized fish.

In addition to fishing, Blue Mesa Reservoir is a popular destination for boating, water skiing, camping, and hiking. The area around the lake is also home to a diverse array of wildlife, including deer, elk, and bald eagles.
