American Falls Reservoir is a large man-made reservoir located in southeastern Idaho, near the city of American Falls. It was created in 1925 with the construction of the American Falls Dam on the Snake River.
The dam and reservoir were built for the primary purpose of generating hydroelectric power, but they also serve important irrigation and flood control functions. The reservoir is fed by the Snake River and covers an area of 56 square miles, with a maximum depth of 100 feet.
The area around the reservoir is known for its scenic beauty and abundant recreational opportunities. The reservoir is popular for fishing, boating, swimming, and camping, and there are several parks and marinas along its shores. In addition, the reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, including rainbow trout, walleye, bass, and catfish.
The reservoir is named after the nearby city of American Falls, which in turn was named after a series of small waterfalls on the Snake River that were mostly submerged by the construction of the dam.The American Falls Dam is 94 feet high and 1,500 feet long, and was the largest concrete dam in the world when it was completed in 1927.The reservoir and dam were featured in the 1953 movie "The Bigamist," directed by and starring Ida Lupino. In 1983, the reservoir and dam were designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
