Lake Barkley is a man-made reservoir located in Western Kentucky, USA. It was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s as part of a flood control and hydroelectric power generation project along with the nearby Kentucky Lake.
The lake is named after Alben W. Barkley, a former US Vice President from Kentucky. It spans across three counties - Lyon, Trigg, and Marshall - and covers an area of approximately 58 square miles.
Lake Barkley is known for its recreational activities, including fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. It is a popular destination for anglers, as it is home to a variety of fish species such as bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill.
In addition to its recreational value, Lake Barkley also serves as a water source for nearby towns and cities, as well as a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife. Bald eagles, ospreys, and pelicans can be spotted around the lake, along with a variety of waterfowl, songbirds, and mammals such as deer, raccoons, and foxes.
Interesting facts about Lake Barkley include that it has over 1,000 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 88 feet. The lake is also part of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a protected area that spans across Kentucky and Tennessee and provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and education.
