Toledo Bend Reservoir is a massive freshwater lake that sits along the border of Louisiana and Texas, created by damming the Sabine River. Completed in 1969 with the construction of the Toledo Bend Dam, the reservoir stretches for about 65 miles and covers more than 185,000 acres, making it one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The project was built to provide hydroelectric power, manage flooding, and supply water to the surrounding region.
Over time, Toledo Bend became famous for something even more exciting than electricity: fishing. The lake’s flooded forests, coves, and underwater structure created a perfect habitat for fish, especially largemouth bass. Today it is widely considered one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country and regularly hosts major fishing tournaments. Anglers travel from all over the U.S. to fish its waters.
What makes Toledo Bend special is the combination of its size, natural beauty, and wildlife. Cypress trees, quiet coves, and miles of undeveloped shoreline give the lake a wild, peaceful feel that many reservoirs have lost. For locals and visitors alike, it’s not just a lake but a destination for fishing, boating, camping, and experiencing the outdoors along the Louisiana-Texas border.
