Lake Marion is more than South Carolina’s largest lake. Its story is tied to one of the state’s most ambitious projects. Created in the late 1930s and early 1940s as part of the Santee Cooper Project, the lake was formed by damming and redirecting the Santee River to provide hydroelectric power, improve navigation, and bring electricity to rural communities during the Great Depression. Construction became a massive undertaking, involving thousands of workers and transforming the surrounding swamps and forests into what is now a 110,000-acre lake.
Today, Lake Marion is a special part of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, known for its winding shoreline, cypress-filled waters, abundant wildlife, and world-class fishing. What began as an engineering project to help power a struggling state has become a place where families gather, anglers chase fish, and generations make memories on the water.
