Center Hill Lake in Tennessee is one of the state’s most beloved and scenic reservoirs, known for its sparkling clear water, dramatic limestone cliffs, and rolling forested hills. Created in 1948 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lake was formed with the construction of Center Hill Dam on the Caney Fork River. The dam was originally built for flood control and hydroelectric power, protecting communities downstream while generating clean electricity for the region.

The history of Center Hill Lake is closely tied to the development of Middle Tennessee. Before the lake existed, the Caney Fork Valley was home to farming communities, mills, and rich river bottomland. When the dam was built, families relocated and the river valley transformed into the deep, blue lake that people know today. Some old roadbeds, stone foundations, and past settlements still rest beneath the surface, adding a layer of quiet mystery to the lake’s history.

What makes Center Hill Lake special is its combination of natural beauty and recreational appeal. The lake stretches across more than 18,000 acres, bordered by steep bluffs, wooded ridges, and hidden coves perfect for swimming, exploring, or anchoring a boat. Its clean, deep water has made it famous for fishing—especially bass, crappie, and walleye—as well as boating, scuba diving, and lakeside camping.

Surrounding the lake are some of Tennessee’s most spectacular natural attractions, including Burgess Falls, Rock Island State Park, and Edgar Evins State Park, each offering waterfalls, hiking trails, and stunning overlooks. Locals take great pride in the lake, seeing it not just as a recreation spot but as a piece of Tennessee history—an iconic place where families gather, vacations happen, and memories are made year after year.
